We couldn't do a series of beers named after past industries of the North East without paying tribute to coal mining, an industry that is ingrained in the fabric of the region to this day. The beer comes in the form of a black IPA at 4.3%. Brewed with Idaho 7®, Columbus, and Superdelic™ hops to bring aromas of citrus, cherry, and spice. Flavours are well-balanced with a nutty base, with notes of spice, pine, resin, and liquorice.

Coal mining in the region can be traced all the way back to Roman times, becoming more prominent in the 13th century, and continuing to rise over centuries to come until the last colliery (Ellington) closed in 2005.

Over its long history, the shipment of coal from the region boosted the local economy massively, and the mines shaped the landscape forever, including many of the villages that were built for workers and their families.
